Fox to move to all HD broadcasting

December 8, 2008 by Derek

Fox is going to shift program broadcasting of all its main and cable networks to an entirely high-definition system under a big dollar deal with Motorola, becoming the first major U.S. programmer to make such a move, considered a bold one at this point in time. But it’s only the first station in a group to eventually do so at some point.

The new satellite system, which includes Motorola encoders, encryption and control software, will be rolled out to the Fox broadcast network, national cable channels, regional sports networks, Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network starting in the first quarter of 2009, to be completed by March/April or so.

Fox has reportedly been working on this transition for over 4 years, replacing older equipment and optimizing their bandwidth to prepare for the event. In our eyes, its a good transition that really should have happened a year or two ago, but better late than never. CBS and other networks will more than likely follow suit in the next year or two.
