HD Story: Alabama Television Solves Its HD Problem – Creatively
January 19, 2009 by Derek
The movement to HD has produced some interesting problems for various content providers, and inspired some very creative solutions. This is just such a case.
Alabama Public Television (APT) ran into some trouble recently when they needed to transmit HD programming from its headquarters to the main control pipeline which then distributes the programs throughout the state. The trouble? The existing system between several cities in Alabama built for standard definition was extremely inadequate for HDTV signal bandwidth, and used older equipment and technology.
That’s when they decided to use Telairity’s BE-8100 H.264 HD encoder, a real-time HD compression solution. It enabled them to support HD signals and transmission without the expensive (really cost-prohibitive) step of replacing their existing network.
The station issued a press release detailing what they did and their rationale, in the hopes that other stations and content providers with the same dilemma would be given a heads up how to handle it. It makes for an interesting read.
