beovision-7-usInto high cool factor and slick, high-end electronics with a fancy name attached? Well, Bang & Olufsen’s new BeoVision 7 has added a few new wrinkles, including Blu-Ray support.

B&O has their marketing fluff and buff engine on high speed with the latest version of the BeoVision 7-40 is the built-in 2.0 Blu-ray player, DVB-HD tuner, 40-inch LCD with 120Hz refresh, and your choice: the BeoLab 7-2 stereo soundbar or the smaller BeoLab 7-4 soundbar with Acoustic Lens included. We Like Obama: There will be no more DTV delays

June 5, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, Technology News

president_officialWe know a few of you out there were just wondering if there are going to be any more last minute DTV date switcheroos or surprises. Well, President Obama released a statement saying there will be no more delays in this switchover, and to let everyone who knows about DTV and all the info make sure to tell those who might not.

With all the ads and such bombing the airwaves, can there really be people who don’t know? How about you, our readers? Anyone out there still in the dark about the switchover? We can’t possibly imagine this, but we suppose there are a few who might not be fully aware of the implications of the switch. No excuses or delays; it’s going to happen.

Now a week to go, and ticking. We can’t wait.

Curve Ahead: NEC CRV43 43″ ‘Curved’ HDTV coming in July

nec_crv_43_1NEC is throwing us all a curve in July with the launch of their “curved” HDTV.

The 43″ showpiece won’t come cheap: It will retail around the $7,999 mark but it’s…curved and very Jetsons looking. This was first shown at CES 2008 and has a 200 nits brightness rating, 10,000:1 contrast, a razor sharp 2880×900 resolution, 0.02ms “Rapid Response,” will cover 99.3% of the Adobe RGB color range.

Yes, the 32:10 aspect ratio is unusual and gaming won’t be among the top listed uses. And the back does have a bit of bulk (9.7″ wide to be exact) to it that is carefully hidden by the company shot shown here. The price seems a bit on the high side, but hey, if this sort of thing tickles your fancy, feel free to go for it.

New Site: FCC OTA antenna Signal Prediction service launches

June 4, 2009 by Derek

hdtv-antenna-smallFree over-the-air (OTA) HD antennas are a very viable alternative to cable/satellite service (in some areas) and we’ve spoken about it a few times. But getting info about whether you’ll be able to get a signal using these has been dicey at best. No longer, we’re happy to report.

The FCC has a cool new tool on their site that shows a much nicer map and actually useful stats that try to predict the signal strength available at your house, so you can determine how viable going this route would be for you.

We’re not sure how accurate the signal estimates are, since this system is pretty new but we’re sure they are more useful than no data at all, which was the case before. So if you’re still prepping for D-Day on June 12th (which appears pretty rock solid at this point as the date), head over to the site and check it out.

Extra Green – for Extra Green: The Loewe Art SL HDTV

June 3, 2009 by Derek

lowIf you’re the green conscious sort of person (and a number of people are nowadays), the Loewe Art SL HDTV may be something that attracts your notice. It’s marketed as one of the greenest HDTVs released to date by any company. And design and specs supposedly don’t suffer either.

This 1080p panel comes with an Eco Mode that lets you control precisely how much power it sucks up and the automatic light dimming uses up to 20% less than that amount when it runs normally. In standby mode, the TV uses just 0.7 Watts (that’s among the lowest of any company), which should slash the power bill quite a bit.

The basic model is £2,345 (that’s $3,885 or so USD) list price. It comes in 42? or 47? screen sizes and you get a Freeview tuner and a 250GB HDR with every purchase. Not cheap, but if sipping power is your style, this may be just the ticket.

From the “Really?” File: 50 million internet-connected HDTVs by 2013?

June 2, 2009 by Derek

adobeflash_tv_042009This analyst’s report shocked us, we’ll admit, and we’re still skeptical: The Yankee Group, a technology trend analyst company, is predicting 50 million+ internet connected HDTVs and 30+ connected Blu-Ray players in homes by 2013.

We’re skeptical mainly because so far, customers haven’t flocked to the existing connected HDTVs from Samsung, and it hasn’t really panned out from the tests we’ve seen and read about so far. Its slow, unreliable and the amount of actual content hasn’t reached anywhere near critical mass yet.

We’ll see if this report rings anywhere near true, but for now, color us unconvinced. We’d love to see it happen, don’t get us wrong, but people (at least some) are still wrapping their minds around HDTV in general, let alone internet widget-TVs.

Happy Joy Joy: Samsung’s SID 2009 booth uncovering many treasures

090602-sammydisplay-01If you’re a big HDTV/display fan (and if you’re not, odds are you wouldn’t be reading this), then this news should make your ears perk up: The Samsung booth at SID 2009 has been generating big news, from monster new LCD displays to news on the OLED front, and other fun stuff.

First off, the aforementioned “monster”: the “world’s first” true 240Hz full HD 55-inch LCD display they displayed recently.  It both looks and sounds pretty amazing, which shouldn’t be shock.

The company is also displaying a brand spankin’ new 10.1-inch LCD for netbooks – eco-friendly style – with 50% less power usage without skimping on resolution and a 1366 x 768 resolution.

Also coming is a new 4-inch qVGA TFT-LCD made using a ultra-fancy new printable semiconductor process, but no specific details are forthcoming there.

The future for TV looks very bright for Samsung, if these products are any indication.
