New Release News: The HANNSG HH251HP 25″ LCD HDTV
July 11, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Hannspree, Product News, TV Brands
HANNSG (actually designed by Hannspree) has announced the release of a solid new 25″ LCD HDTV to its line in the form of the HH251HP. The stats looks good, and it appears to be something people may have to look at when deciding on a new HDTV.
This widescreen LCD supports a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (so it is a full 1080p TV) and has 5ms response, 800:1 contrast ratio (15,000:1 Dynamic ratio), and two 1.5W speakers as well. All solid stats given its size and price.
It also comes with several ports too, including D-Sub, DVI and dual HDMI connections. The HH251HP can be acquired for £183.99 ($298 USD) and comes with a 3-year warranty as part of the deal. Not bad at all. It should be in stores in the next few weeks or so, starting in Europe and spreading across the globe over time.
Impact: Baseball umps credit HDTV for changing the way games are called
July 10, 2009 by Derek
HDTV has no doubt changed the way many sports do their business on TV, but even baseball is admitting that the way games are called has changed because of the high resolution of HDTV.
Now that viewers at home (not to mention in the stands) have high res screens to study calls over and over again, not to mention DVRs to shuttle back and forth at their leisure, and near constant replays on ESPN SportsCenter it’s changed the way they call close plays on the base paths.
Of course, making sure the calls are right and the game is being called the way it should be isn’t a bad thing, but we can imagine some long-time umps getting their feathers ruffled by all the technology showing up in America’s favorite pastime. We see it as nothing but good for the sport. No more missed calls, no more umpires with God complexes that have caused so many debates over the years.
Lawsuit Lament: Round 1 of Vizio vs. Funai drawing to a close
July 10, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, TV Brands, Vizio

Round one of the legal battle between Vizio and Funai is rounding down now, and it appears to be a huge victory for Vizio.
U.S. Customs has ruled that all VIZIO TVs do not infringe on Funai’s Patent 6,115,074 — which was actually rejected by the Patent Office a few months ago, so the point may have been moot anyway.
With the USPTO and US Customs now agreeing with Vizio (for now), all the bureaucratic stuff is in place and Vizio TV units can enter the US on their journey to homes all across the country. This is huge news for Vizio and all of their stockholders (and us, who as HDTV lovers will benefit from the lower prices and more competition).
Next up is actually Vizio’s countersuit against Funai for filing the first lawsuit – don’t you just love legal drama? Makes TNT look positively tame.

First Shot Fired: Wal-Mart reduces Magnavox Blu-Ray player to $98

Filed under Industry News, Magnavox, Product News, TV Brands
So here it is: the first volley in the format wars between DVD and Blu-Ray. We knew it was coming, and now its here. How will this impact the market for people who said Blu-Ray was too expensive?
It seems a sharp-eyed shopper at Wal-Mart spotted the Magnavox NB530MGX Blu-ray player rolled back for good to $98. Now this doesn’t have all the fancy internet-connected BR Live features present on more expensive players, but if you’re not worried about that or wouldn’t use it, here’s the player for you. No more excuses to view your movies in true 1080p HD, the way they should be seen.
We’ll keep you updated on this as news comes in about more discounts.
Release News: Sharp announces its new AQUOS HDTV Line
July 8, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, Product News, Sharp, TV Brands
CEDIA (a fanatical home theater related show) is only two months away, but Sharp wasn’t content to wait until then to announce a bunch of new AQUOS TVs.
First off, we’re taking a look at their first LED-backlit AQUOS TV, which will be available in 52″ (LC-52LE700UN), 46″ (LC-46LE700UN), 40″ (LC-40E700UN) and 32″ (LC-32LE700UN) screen sizes. That’s quite a bit of variety in size there.
Each of the sets features full 1080p resolutions, a new X-Gen Panel (which supposedly leads to deep black levels that could be some of the best ever), a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast and 176-degree viewing angles for great viewing anywhere in the room.
Sharp also debuted the gigantic 65″ LC-65E77UM and the 60″ LC-60E77UN, 1080p sets that are part of the E77 series and offer 120Hz tech, 4 ms response, four (count em, four) HDMI sockets and an RS-232 socket. These should really be something to behold.
More details about these to be released shortly, and we’ll cover them here of course when they’re released.
Price Drop: The Mitsubishi LaserVue HDTV

Remember when Mitsubishi debuted their LaserVue, the laser-driven HDTV that made a big splash in the market, then sorta slit its own throat by releasing itself at almost $7,000 USD? Well, its finally back, and this time they’ve slashed the price. A little.
The Mitsubishi L65A90 65-inch LaserVue HDTV is now available at Amazon for $6,499 $6,949.99, giving it a $500 $50 reduction over last September’s $6,999 release price. It’s not much, but this is a heck of a TV. It had manufacturing and supply issues that stopped it from being made for awhile (as we reported right here on SS), but now its being sold again.
The highlights of Laser TVs: they’re green (read: energy efficient), 3D-ready because of the intrinsic technology and come in a super slim case too.

This is an article we enjoyed: You know you’re a videophile if…and there’s a pretty funny (and somewhat true) list of requirements, ranging from “Download quality will never compare to Blu-Ray” (something we agree with) to “Helping a random person pick out a HDTV at Best Buy, and you don’t work there” (something this writer actually did one time, sadly enough).
The list itself we can’t argue too much with, really in fact. It’s a funny and insightful read, and we recommend you give it a look. Let us know in the comments if you fit 5 or more things on this list; that means you too are a videophile, and we want to hear from you.

More Choice is Good: DirecTV to add local HD channels in 7 markets
July 6, 2009 by Derek
DirecTV has been known to lag behind a bit in bringing local HD channels to several of their markets, much to their customers’ frustration. Now they’re trying to change that, with their recent announcement.
To quote their press release:
DIRECTV will begin the roll-out of the new HD local markets later this summer. The new markets include: Charleston-Huntington, W. Va.; Columbia, S.C.; Huntsville-Decatur, Ala.; Jackson, Miss.; Lexington, Ky.; Roanoke-Lynchburg, Va.; and Shreveport, La.
“Offering our customers the most compelling HD programming lineup available continues to be a top priority for us,” said Derek Chang, executive vice president, Content Strategy and Development, DIRECTV, Inc. “We understand the importance local programming in HD plays in the overall television viewing experience for our customers and we will continue to extend our HD leadership with more national and local HD channels next year.”
More HD in more hands is a good thing for all TV lovers, so its good to see DirecTV grabbing the ball and running with it a bit more for people in under-served markets.

July 4, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Product News, Samsung, TV Brands
Samsung is known for making nice gear, but their latest model is a combo HDTV and monitor, and has been released mainly for the Korean market.
Samsung’s 23-incher full 1080p HDTV and monitor combo P2370HD offers a built-in HDTV tuner, a HDMI port and built-in stereo speakers too that pump out decent sound (great for computer games or TV viewing). It sounds pretty nice, and the move towards combined units is increasing, as Dell and Sony have similar models coming out in the near future, based on the rumors we’re hearing.
The P2370HD will have a suggested retail price of 526,000 KRW (which is about $411 USD) when its released later in the summer.
“Green” Report: A Tour of Panasonic’s Flat Panel Recycling Center
July 3, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, Panasonic, TV Brands
More and more companies are becoming aware of the “green” factor in their presentations, and Panasonic is among those companies obviously, judging from this tour of a recycling plant where old TVs are turned into useful goods once again.
Courtesy of AV Watch, a tech blog (and Google Translate), we present a tour through one of Panasonic’s recycling facilities, where the latest breakthrough uses lasers to separate the front and rear glass of CRTs, allowing for three times faster processing, thus cheaper costs and more incentive for companies to recycle, a good thing for our fragile planet.
Some of these gadgets look like they should’ve been recycled long ago, as a humorous aside.

Overseas HD Report: British Blu-Ray sales shoot up 231%
July 3, 2009 by Derek
Hey, the British seem to be appreciating the benefits of Blu-Ray and HDTV a lot more now, it appears, claiming 3.1 million discs sold since the beginnig of 2009.
Still, even with a huge 231% jump over last year’s figures, that hasn’t made up for a 9.5% drop in sales of DVDs overall, as even over the pond they’re discovering the wonders of downloading and streaming content. Over 900 small retailers there have closed over the past year, making the US economic woes appear feeble by comparison.
Even with consumers “continuing to spend money on the product” once they’ve seen it, according to BVA director general Lavinia Carey, expect even companies to start jumping on the download bandwagon to combat piracy and declining overall sales.

Earth Lovers Take Heed: The LG 22″ W2286L HDTV/Monitor
July 1, 2009 by Derek
Filed under LG, Product News, TV Brands
LG’s engineers have done it again: made a nice 22″ LCD with great stats and uses 40% less juice than previous models of its kind did. That’s pretty neat stuff, and eco-lovers will adore it (and your wallet will too in the long run).
It also can double as a PC monitor, has a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and HDMI sockets, a DVI port and a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, and a brightness sensor that responds to ambient light by itself. It’s in a class of its own among the smaller LCD TVs.
No word on price or when it’ll arrive in the US, but hopefully it and its 24″ cousin will show up here very soon.
