Microsoft confirms, HD Lovers Saddened: No Blu-Ray on XBox 360

xbox_360-no-blu-rayRumors have been flying about the possibility of a Blu-Ray addon for the XBox 360, and the press has been back and forth on the subject, as has MS. It now appears that the rumors have been put to rest: it won’t happen.

It’s official: Microsoft engineers have confirmed in several recently published reports that there will be no Blu-Ray joy on the XBox 360. They believe the future of movies is on-demand, not physical media. That’s an interesting (and somewhat valid) stance to take, the problem being that transition is a few years away from being reality.  Right now, not everyone has the bandwidth to plug in a wi-fi connection into a console and get great speeds with it, enough for movie streaming anyway.

We’re a little saddened here as HDTV lovers about this development, but not surprised really. MS has always touted their eventual plans for a movie mecca with the 360 platform, so we wish them luck, all the while wondering why an HD-DVD addon exists, but a Blu-Ray one doesn’t.
