We aren’t really sure this is the best thing for the medium long-term, but companies seem to think this is the best path for market acceptance, for some reason. This time Disney made the deal with Sony, and here’s the whole rundown:

This time it’s Disney, opting to align its Alice in Wonderland and Bolt movies with Sony products over the holiday season as the two team up on “consumer and retail education, promotion and marketing support for in-home 3D devices and content.” That means buyers of Sony 3D TVs and Blu-ray players may have one of the above as a pack-in, while everyone else waits ’til the unspecified time when they’re released at retail. Hear that? That’s the sound of 3D early adopters queueing up Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs for the umpteenth time, camping out in line for Monster House next week or wildly overpaying for pack in / overseas 3D discs only they can’t otherwise get on eBay.

We agree that this will create an artificially high market for awhile, and may prevent wide penetration in the industry for awhile. We’ll see how all of this shakes out, as we don’t have a great feeling about all these exclusive 3D BR deals going on right now.

Loewe has noticed, and has stomped onto the scene with an upcoming HDTV LED setup that should make many drool. Here’s more info to chew on:

Ultra high-end German television maker Loewe revealed at IFA that its 32-inch and 42-inch Connect LED line will be refreshed with 200Hz edge LED backlit panels and improved MediaNet connectivity. Specifically MediaNet has been revamped to feature a new LAN interface for streaming local video or audio content on the TV’s integrated DVR as well as from DLNA compatible devices and online sources. A so-called “Follow Me” feature is another handy addition that allows users to easily transfer a program in progress from TV to another display for completion — which should prove useful to shipping magnates who prefer passing out to Titanic in bed after starting in the jacuzzi. Trusted Reviews also reports that Loewe, along with Sharp and Philips, is promoting web-based services built on CE-HTML that are optimized for TV displays, and even demoed a version of the BBC’s iPlayer using the technology behind closed doors. Style-wise, the luxury set will ship in three colors along with a choice of stand and a 2.1 speaker setup when it hits the UK this November.

No prices set yet, but we aren’t expecting to see this in the bargain aisle at Wal-Mart, in our expert estimation.

It’s a big deal for the company, even if demand early on is not expected to be overwhelming.

The exclusive will run for an unspecified period of time, probably not forever, as we expected. But during that period, Panasonic will be able to include the disc with the purchase of a Panasonic 3D HDTV, or even sell it separately at retail.

It wasn’t clear exactly how it was expected to be sold (and the company didn’t make it obvious in their recent press releases), so we’ll wait and see what happens once it hits in early December. We suspect it’ll be a bundle of some kind to push those models out the door.

Picture is courtesy of Engadget, and it shows off a mighty impressive unit we think will make a big splash when it debuts.

We always have extorted the wonders of LG on this blog, and it appears they’ve outdone themselves, if anything with this latest display. They tout the thinnest of any LCD LED TV out there right now, even if the bottom part grows ever wider with having to stuff things onto it that used to be in the back.

Still, LG’s LEX8 8.8mm thick LCD is razor thin and the picture quality with the localized “Nano LED” dimming is stellar; with many bloggers reporting the best overall sharpness of any unit at the IFA show this year.

A lot, we guess…anyway, IFA brought more nice new announcements as Sharp stepped forward with a slew of new Quattron HDTVs to be coming to an electronics store near you in the near future. We always love covering new stuff, so here’s the scoop via Engadget:

Just in case those George Takei commercials didn’t clue you in that Sharp was serious about Quattron, the company has announced four new TV lines at IFA sporting yellow as a fourth subpixel color. At the top of the list, the Quattron 3D-enabled LE925 line will be available in 60-inch or 46-inch sizes and feature Sharp’s proprietary high-speed FRED LCD signal processing technology along with side-mounted scanning LED backlighting — which like the LV Series — is touted to produce 1.8x better brightness than competing sets and reduce 3D crosstalk. Aquos Net+ connectivity is thrown in too, along with 2D-to-3D conversion, a digital triple tuner and 8GB of built-in flash memory for timeshift recording. Playing second fiddle to this overachiever are the 2D-only LE924E, LE824E and LE814E series, which will also feature Aquos Net+.

As with most products at this show, exact prices and release timeframes aren’t available. But this line promises some of the best specs on any recent HDTV releases.

Here’s the scoop:

It’s a Samsung remote control that first blew us away at CES in January when Samsung’s ultra-thin LCD 9000 series TV was first announced. So why revisit it? Well, for starters… look at it! It’s a 3-inch touchsreen remote control in its production form that’s now shipping with the LED backlit 200Hz (not 240Hz, it’s Europe remember) Samsung C9000 — a TV measuring just 7.98-mm thick with a 55-inch diagonal. The remote control itself is built on a 600MHz ARM 11 processor with a custom remote control layer sitting atop Linux and a 2.4GHz 802.11n radio. As such, this little powerhouse gives you lots of options to control and view your media including the ability to continue watching the game even as your bladder drags you into less, shall we say, comfortable rooms. You can even preview other channels without interrupting that vast expanse of LCD viewed by others in the room. It also supports DLNA for streaming your media from any number of compatible devices. Naturally, it also functions as a programable remote for all your new gadget additions.

No prices or market estimates yet, but this one will make some noise, no doubt about it.

OLED’s failure to do anything in the mainstream isn’t a big deal, as LCD has gotten slim enough that it hardly matters in terms of reduced size. Picture quality will improve no doubt, and its nice to see some companies stepping forward with early support for the technology. LG is just such a company.

So in a twist of oddness, LG has stolen its own OLED thunder on the TV circuit lately. In line with earlier rumors we reported, it will be showing off a 0.11-inch thick 31-inch 3D OLED display prototype at the IFA get-together this week, but that poor little OLED demo will be sharing a booth with a ready for retail 0.35-inch thick LCD that comes in big time sizes above 30″, so it may not be the darling of the show many thought it might be.

Still, here’s to hoping this OLED breakthrough speeds along the transition to retail all the more quickly.

Read on to see more details:

Now that LED backlighting has trickled down to nearly every HDTV lineup, it appears the big manufacturers will have to find new ways to differentiate their products, like LG’s upcoming LEX8 television. Set to debut at IFA in Berlin before going on sale in Germany and Korea next month (no word on the US), LG claims that thanks to a ‘thin film of miniscule dots positioned in front of a full array of LEDs’ its Nano Lighting technology — perhaps of the Nanosys variety it licensed earlier this year — makes for a clearer, smoother picture, with the slimmest and narrowest outline of any LED TV, ever, at just .88cm thick with a 1.25cm bezel.

Prices/exact availability hasn’t been released yet, but we aren’t expecting super soon – or super cheap.
