It appears Blu-Ray must not be doing too badly (we’ll leave it up to our readers to decide if BR is doing well or not), but Paramount’s latest idea to get it going is a staggered release schedule that would see BR versions released a month before the DVD version.
Variety reports Dance Flick will be released on September 8 in unrated Blu-ray (and rental DVD form), and four to eight weeks later the purchase DVD version will be released. It’s a bold experiment to jump start the Blu-Ray industry, and as HD lovers, we hope it does so.
Disney did this with Bolt, but retailers messed it up and ended up putting both on the shelves when they weren’t supposed to, and will do the same with Snow White, according to rumors.
And we can picture a day, very soon, when blockbuster films will be released on BR first, then DVD later on, and that’s a day that should start to signal a shift to Blu-Ray for mainstream video viewing.
