Big Time: LG shows off OLED 31″ Prototype, blows minds

August 31, 2010 by
Filed under Industry News, Product News

We all love OLED and its potential, but so far, its expensive and not even close to mainstream really. OLED’s failure to do anything in the mainstream isn’t a big deal, as LCD has gotten slim enough that it hardly matters in terms of reduced size. Picture quality will improve no doubt, and its nice to see some companies stepping forward with early support for the technology. LG is just such a company.

So in a twist of oddness, LG has stolen its own OLED thunder on the TV circuit lately. In line with earlier rumors we reported, it will be showing off a 0.11-inch thick 31-inch 3D OLED display prototype at the IFA get-together this week, but that poor little OLED demo will be sharing a booth with a ready for retail 0.35-inch thick LCD that comes in big time sizes above 30″, so it may not be the darling of the show many thought it might be.

Still, here’s to hoping this OLED breakthrough speeds along the transition to retail all the more quickly.

Seeing the Light: LG to release a new HDTV with ‘Nano LED’ feature

August 30, 2010 by
Filed under LG, Product News, Technology News, TV Brands

LG is one of our fav companies out there now in the HDTV world, and now they’re releasing a HDTV model with some cool sounding new tech that should serve to make HDTV more fun and brighter to watch, it seems. Read on to see more details:

Now that LED backlighting has trickled down to nearly every HDTV lineup, it appears the big manufacturers will have to find new ways to differentiate their products, like LG’s upcoming LEX8 television. Set to debut at IFA in Berlin before going on sale in Germany and Korea next month (no word on the US), LG claims that thanks to a ‘thin film of miniscule dots positioned in front of a full array of LEDs’ its Nano Lighting technology — perhaps of the Nanosys variety it licensed earlier this year — makes for a clearer, smoother picture, with the slimmest and narrowest outline of any LED TV, ever, at just .88cm thick with a 1.25cm bezel.

Prices/exact availability hasn’t been released yet, but we aren’t expecting super soon – or super cheap.

Hi-Def News: LG showing off 31″ OLED HDTV at IFA 2010

August 22, 2010 by
Filed under Industry News, Product News

It seems LG is doing some very cool stuff with OLED these days, if a recent exhibition at IFA 2010 is to be believed. Pictures are worth a thousand words as they say, and here’s the proof, as you can see. Read on, via Engadget HD coverage:

We’ve been tracking LG OLED TV production rumors for nearly as long as Bieber’s been alive, and recently got wind that their ultra-thin 7mm LED TV would be appearing at IFA this year, but now more news has materialized. According to OLED-Display, the company plans to show a new 31-inch OLED television prototype in addition to confidence-compensating 72-inch 3D LED TV. Sadly, other critical details like resolution and pricing are nowhere to be found, but considering the company’s 15-inch EL9500 OLED — which we’re still waiting for stateside — is selling for close to $2,400 in the UK, it’s fair to assume a model double in size will be a Kanye-level extravagance. Seeing a larger OLED example before 2011 though will be a step in the right direction for LG, and appears to fall in line with the company’s own rollout predictions.

We’ll keep an eye on these developments as they are released. The possibility of larger OLEDs sets us to dreaming, indeed.

Bundle Action: LG getting in on the 3D package act

July 12, 2010 by
Filed under LG, Product News, TV Brands

We reported about Sony offering their 3D bundles recently, now according to recent reports LG is getting in on the bundle action as well with their upcoming release.

Announced just today, the “1-2-3D” bundle (as its referred to) applies to all who purchase a LX9500 or LX6500 series Infinia LCD TV and LG Blu-ray 3D unit, and includes two pairs of glasses in the package as well, PLUS an instant $100 rebate and coupon for the IMAX Under the Sea 3D Blu-ray 3D disc to come with the package to round it out. It’s still not cheap, but a lot cheaper than all of these individually.

The bundle pricing is pretty much equivalent to Samsung’s package bundle, so it really comes down to which 3DTV or player you prefer, or even as basic as a question as comparing getting Monsters vs. Aliens or this IMAX film, whichever way your preferences swing.

Thoughts: How much did you spend to get your HDTV?

June 26, 2010 by

Prices, features and sizes are pretty varied in today’s HDTV marketplace, but one thing is for sure: Prices are so much lower than they used to be in the ‘old days’ (read: about 5-7 years ago or so) that it just boggles the mind. Even this writer’s current LG HDTV 42″ is about half of what it was just 2+ years ago (the source of many annoyed conversations in our home).

So we’re curious: what route economy wise did you take with your HDTV? A moderately priced Vizio or Samsung? A larger priced Sony or Pioneer model?  What kind of budget did you start out with, and what did you end up getting? These answers will vary widely, we understand, but hey, that’s the point of polls, after all.

So feel free to leave your comments in our Comments area. What kind of dough did you lay out to get in on the HDTV revolution?

HDTV Club: When did you join?

We all remember our first…HDTV that is. Most remember when they powered on their wondrous HDTV model for the very first time, and gasped in amazement (at least I did anyway).

It was an LG 42″ HDTV 1080p for me a few years ago, and I couldn’t believe the detail and clarity. Even DVDs just popped off the screen, and it opened a whole new world of late night television joy for me. To this day, I hold a special place in my heart for LG and their products (which you know if you read this blog regularly anyway).

How about you, our cherished readers? When did you get your first, and how did it affect your viewing habits and perspective on TV? Feel free to let us know.

Thursday’s HDTV Deals

Here is our list of fine HDTV deals for this equally fine Thursday:

Walmart has a killer deal on the LG 47LD450 47″ 1080p 60Hz LCD HDTV for $788 with free shipping too. Use the ‘Add to cart’ to see the price. For any LG, especially this size, this is a can’t miss deal. It just shows how far prices can still fall on bigger units.

TigerDirect.com – A very nice deal on a highly-regarded Sharp AQUOS LC-32LE700UN 32” 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV for $599.99 = $594.99 – with free shipping as well? Amazing indeed. This one has got raves for its picture quality.

How can you resist either of those? Both are some of the better deals we’ve ever seen on the web.

LG Goodness: New 3D display with 2K resolution wows

May 26, 2010 by
Filed under Industry News, LG, TV Brands

We all know LG likes to bust it out when it comes to big-time advances in HDTV tech, and now they’ve topped themselves with a report of a 2K resolution 3D HDTV screen they’re testing at various venues. More from blogs:

LG has announced an 84-inch 3DTV boasting UHD resolution and a claim to being the world’s biggest of its kind. To be honest, at that size you really can’t get away with old reliable 1080p, so it’s comforting to see LG’s keeping pixel pitch in mind when designing its headline grabbers. In other news coming out of the SID 2010 show, LG is demonstrating a “liquid lens” TV that’ll give you glasses-free 3D, though the details of how that works are a bit scarce, while the company’s also pushing its IPS wares in a big way, with a 47-inch HDTV, a 32-inch pro monitor as well.

Now that’s some serious wares LG is preparing for public release, and we for one can’t wait for these babies to make their way to retail, even if we wish those screens were available in cheaper 2D version, which we would no doubt ‘settle’ for.

OLED, Printed: DuPont develops new screen technique

May 18, 2010 by
Filed under Industry News, Technology News

Right now, LG is the big OLED boy in town, with their 15-inch OLED TV, but at about $2,500 retail, not many people will have this in their living rooms, dens or wherever.

Now the promises of costs dropping thanks to ‘printed’ displays may be coming to pass, as chemical company DuPont has joined up with Dainippon Screen to fashion a printing technique that can line-feeding a 50-inch display in just two minutes or so. That’s 120 seconds to you and me, and that’s pretty exciting stuff, indeed. It’s been compared to a ‘high precision garden hose’ of the electronic persuasion, “moving” over the display’s surface and ‘printing’ the display on the screen.

DuPont Displays President William Feehery says the method is being worked on to scale it up to displays up to 50″ and will eventually be able to compete with LCD’s on cost with a 15-20 year span of life. It isn’t 100 years (as was promised by a few manufacturers) but that isn’t bad at all, folks. We’ll update you, of course, as this technology develops.

Cutting Edge: LG set to release 3D network Blu-Ray player soon

May 16, 2010 by
Filed under LG, Product News, TV Brands

LG has always been a fairly cutting edge company, and now they’re asserting that rep with their latest announcement of a pretty cool upcoming product.

LG’s latest creation has it all: HDMI 1.4, internet connectivity, DLNA, 3D and 1080p; the whole lot, pretty much. We like the feature set, and now we have some idea when units will go out for public consumption. Approximately, anyway. The BX580 is on Amazon for $399.99 retail and is LG’s very first network 3D Blu-ray player.

Aside from the obvious ability to handle forthcoming 3D Blu-ray titles, it also ships with NetCast Entertainment Access as well. Amazon states a 1-2 month shipping window, so we’re guessing that timeframe will be pretty accurate when it’ll start showing up in stores. We’re guessing a $350 or so street price, and an early July or so arrival date.

It appears our assessment of 3D HD as a brief trend may have been inaccurate.

Cheap (sort of) 3D: LG released lower cost 3D HDTV models

May 3, 2010 by
Filed under LG, Product News, TV Brands

LG has been one those companies that always surprises us with some interesting decisions, and now a “lower cost” 3D option for HDTV? Yes indeed, and they’ll coming soon for the Japanese market. Engadget has us covered with all the details:

Say hello to LG’s new “low cost” option for a 3D LCD TV, the LX6500 series. The term entry level is being tossed around, but at 5.9 million won ($4,390) for a 55-inch, it’s more of a slightly less expensive alternative to the high end 9500 series that started shipping in March. Altogether that means you’ll see a different LED backlighting system with fewer zones, lower 240Hz refresh rate and 8,000,000:1 claimed contrast ratio compared to the more expensive HDTV models, but it still maintains a slim bezel and NetCast internet features. Along with its 42- and 47-inch cousins, these TVs have already popped up for preorder stateside on Vanns.com for significantly less ($3,299 for the 55LX6500) but we’d probably wait and see how they compare to Samsung’s LED or CCFL lit options, as well as the similar Bravias on the way from Sony before committing any cash to the cause.

Good advice, that last sentence. Odds are the other competing companies will have something to say with this move being made.

The Fight Is On: LCD vs. Plasma

April 12, 2010 by

Let’s face it: 2009 was a pretty bad year for Plasma in general. Prices went lower (a good thing), but how else could you describe a year where the ‘king of plasmas’ exits the marketplace for good, purposely?

It was hard enough when Kuro lovers learned that Panasonic would be manufacturing them instead of illustrious Plasma makers Pioneer, and its a good thing Panasonic, Samsung and LG continued on and didn’t hang their heads when Vizio joined the Plasma quitters club  — Panasonic even opened the biggest ever Plasma plant in 2009 which should continue the Plasma tradition for quite awhile to come.

We aren’t sure who will win the HDTV format wars for the next few years, but its looking apparent that LCD has huge favor with many large companies, and Plasma will have an uphill battle to regain its lost market share.
