Breaking: Toshiba debuts ZX900 series of HDTVs in the US

Engadget HD is reporting that Toshiba has announced a series of new HDTV units with tons of great features, a 480 Hz refresh rate, and built-in Net apps, including Netflix streaming and the like. We love the sound of this so far:
Toshiba claims that it’s packed 143 times the processing power over existing televisions. That processing makes way for Toshiba’s Resolution+ upscaling, a 480Hz frame rate (completely ready for 3D), and some home media server capabilities as well. The centerpiece is the Net TV applications, which include Netflix, VUDU, CinemaNow and Pandora, and there’s 802.11n WiFi and 1TB of HDD for streaming and storage….The 55-inch and 65-inch displays use KIRA2 LED-backlit displays with 512 zones of localized dimming, and just in case this was wasn’t enough, the sets have built-in Wireless HD and to connect the Cell-packing set-top box to the display wire-free.
Now the price/availability wasn’t mentioned, though we expect it to go quite high initially as far as the dollar amount goes. The 65″ will probably be around the $4-5K mark, in our estimation. Well worth it also, in our humble estimation.

Something Is Amiss: Toshiba makes shaky showing of their BR units at IFA
September 5, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, Product News
Now this is interesting: It seems perhaps Toshiba isn’t totally rooting for Blu-Ray HD disc technology, at least based on their reportedly shaky showing at IFA of their new Blu-Ray units.
Here’s a quote from Engadget HD about their experience with Toshiba and their Blu-Ray players once approaching their booth for a demo:
In reality, when we finally found the lone BDX2000, the LCD it was plugged into was off, while numerous DVD players and upscaling tech demos littered the surrounding booth area. Once we got a rep to turn it on for us, the Blu-ray player seemed to work just fine, as should be expected. The new Blu-ray equipped P500, however, wasn’t so successful: our colleagues at Engadget Spanish watched an attempted Blu-ray showing on the laptop go awry, and by the time we’d dropped by the booth, any Blu-ray models of the P500 had been pulled from the show floor due to crashiness. In talking with a Toshiba rep, it’s clear that the company hasn’t abandoned its ideas of internet distribution and other alternatives to the once rival format of Blu-ray.
It appears Toshiba isn’t putting their “all” into support for the format (since it beat their HD-DVD, one could hardly blame them), but hopefully they’ll get it straightened out before launch.
The Return of the HDTV Deals – Thursday edition
Here’s two more amazing deals for your consideration, after awhile without any:
Buy.com – Nice deal on a well-reviewed TV: the Toshiba REGZA 37” LCD HDTV – Piano Black for $599.99 with free shipping too…simply amazing. Nice specs.
6ave.com – Nice small TV for a side room/study: the Coby 15” LCD HDTV for $134.00 – 5% off coupon code we give you “AFL5″ = $127.30 with free shipping – child’s play indeed.
Thanks for joining us and be sure to stop by tomorrow!
Finally: Sharp/Sony LCD factory up and official
The recent economic problems have made things slow way down for this deal to go through, but Sharp and Sony have finally completed a billion dollar joint deal that has Sony taking a 7% stake later this year and stepping up to 34% by the end of April 2011, in a much-needed partnership between two companies struggling to sell units.
Production access is the big draw for Sony, while Sharp views this as the first of 2-3 deals to help them sell the 13+ million 42″ers produced each year to other manufacturers and companies under various nameplates.
The Nikkei says other partnerships with Toshiba and various other Europe companies are in the cards, so after October (when the plant will open) whatever name is on the front of your TV, there’s a 50/50 chance it will originate at this factory.
Kitchen Friendly: The Toshiba 19LV612U HDTV
July 23, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Product News, Toshiba, TV Brands
There have been kitchen friendly sets released before, most of which could be mounted under a cabinet or whatever. This new line from Toshiba adds a few twists though, with a finish that resists stains and is designed to fit right in with an average modern kitchen.
Announced as the of the Stainless Style TV line, this 18.5-inch set has a built-in DVD player, integrated digital TV tuner, and is 720p (its only real weakness feature wise).
It’s coated with stainless steel, which makes it fit in well and resist the obvious moisture and other issues that can happen with a delicate electronic appliance in a kitchen. Other specs include: a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, HDMI inputs, headphone plugin and of course, mounting support.
It’s expected to debut and cut into family meal conversation time in mid-September for $349.99 SRP.
Sleeping (Movie Watching?) With The Enemy: Toshiba to produce Blu-Ray decks?
July 18, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, Product News
Experiencing the Saturday doldrums? How about this news: Toshiba is joining with the enemy.
You heard it here: Japan’s Yomiuri is reporting today that Toshiba is expected to finally join the evil world of Blu-ray later this year, perhaps November. The company that battled for HD-DVD is giving in and going to the “dark side”.
For their part, we’ve heard both confirmations and strong denials about the company finally giving in and supporting the format it once battled so strongly, resorting to all sorts of things to smear it, but this seems to come from a source pretty high up that it will happen.
Their first DVD/Blu-ray unit is on for release somewhere in the world by the year’s end. The war is officially over, and now even the strongest supporter of HD-DVD is waving the white flag.

It’s Easy Being “Green”: New HDTV models from Toshiba to debut in Japan soon
March 5, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Technology News, Toshiba, TV Brands
Going “green” does seem to be the new catchword in the HDTV lexicon, and Toshiba knows it. The latest Toshiba models from Japan aims to save big bucks (or at least a few bucks) on the user’s energy bill, and these models will be debuting in Tokyo very soon.
The lineup includes: the 32″ 32C8000, the 37″ 37C8000 and the big boy, the 42″ 42C8000 reportedly use from 30-50% less juice than previous models in the same line, and all 3 models features the now fairly standard 120Hz technology to make action scenes flow smoothly.
All include a digital TV tuner, and the bigger two models include 1080p panels (the 32″ does 720p). No prices were released as usual, but models should be in Tokyo stores at the end of March or so. We’re fairly certain other shores should follow later on.
Lawsuit Blues: Toshiba loses $1 million DLP Bulb case
March 2, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Technology News, Toshiba, TV Brands
Toshiba’s bottom line hasn’t been faring so well of late, and now its taken another hit: they just lost a lawsuit involving replacing DLP bulbs.
New York courts decided that Toshiba needs to pay over $1 million to settle a class action lawsuit filed in 2007. The suit stated: ”the lamps of certain Toshiba DLP TV’s were susceptible to premature failure causing purchasers to repeatedly expend hundreds of dollars for replacement bulbs, which suffered from the same defect.” On purpose, it seems to imply. Now many companies do this sort of thing in sneaky little ways, as a product that never breaks doesn’t make as much money.
After a long investigation, Toshiba was found to be responsible for replacing the bulbs and compensating the 265,000+ customers impacted. Warranties on bulbs was also extended to 1 year on affected models. Well, that’s how it goes…hopefully Toshiba will make sure to get their bulbs from a better source next time around.
