LG and 3D: LG’s first 3D HDTV is released
March 26, 2010 by Derek
Filed under LG, Product News, TV Brands
Well, here’s a way to make those 3D TVs attractive — no bezel and make it crazy thin. That’s pretty much what LG did, it appears, as they prepare to release their own take on 3D HDTV technology. It should play this pretty well, we assume.
The newly minted LX9500 at 22.3mm it still makes the majority of laptops jealous. Paired to a minimal 16mm bezel, it makes for quite the living gorgeous furniture/accessory, whether turned on or off.
The new LED-backlit TV will offer the usual full 1080p res and a 400Hz refresh rate as well, which is just fine for those active shutter glasses. A 10,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio is given to round out the impressive stats.
Reports peg this unit will sell for 4.7 million Won ($4,134 USD) launch price for the monstrous 47″ model in Korea, and it’ll head over to US shores around May or so for around the same price point, with a 55″ model being available by then as well.
Saturday’s HDTV Deal-o-Rama
Here they are, once again, the HDTV weekend deals:
Vanns.com has a nice deal on the Sony Bravia KDL-52W5150 52” LCD HDTV for $1397.77 , and free shipping too. We’ve noticed a good price drop on Sony TVs of late, and that trend continues with this awesome deal.
TigerDirect.com has a great LG Plasma unit, the 42PQ30 42” 720p “Smooth Motion” Plasma HDTV for $549.99 with free shipping as well. Unbelievable pic (and that famous LG quality) for a great low price.
Thanks for reading, and please do come again for more great HDTV news and deals!
OLED Update: LG to release 15″ model to limited stores in May
February 28, 2010 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, LG, Product News, TV Brands
Critics at CES and other spots have raved about the prief looks they’ve had at LG’s upcoming OLED HDTV models, and perhaps it’s time for all of the drooling, envy and hoping to come to an end: it’s coming. Soon. Now that the Sony OLED is dead, this will take its place, no doubt.
The deep-pocketed among us humans won’t have to wait much longer to sate the need for an astounding 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 0.001ms response time (yes, that is not a typo).
LG has officially announced it’ll be releasing it’s 15-inch OLED panel into spots in Europe this May (with mid-summer availability projected in the US). As expected, it won’t be cheap: $2,725 USD in Austria, with around that much projected on US shores. Cutting edge ain’t cheap, as many who live there know already.
Sunday’s HDTV Deals and Steals

TigerDirect.com has the Samsung UN55B8000 55” 1080p LCD HDTV for $2499.99 – $300 off coupon code we’ll give you “UDD883″ = $2199.99 – with free shipping too? We’re always looking out for you, our readers.
Thanks for reading and see you all soon!
Look, No Bezels: LG launches “Skinny Frame” Plasma HDTV line
February 17, 2010 by Derek
Filed under LG, Product News, TV Brands
Who says Plasma as a HDTV technology is dead? Panasonic isn’t saying, and apparently, neither is LG. They’re launching a new small bezel line of Plasmas with good stats that will be debuting soon.
They’ll appear first in their home market of Korea and will be called “Skinny Frame,” a reference to the tiny 25mm border around the panels — which honestly isn’t super thin these days. You can grab them in 50″ and 60″ flavors, and both include super fast 600Hz refresh rates, contrast adjustment based on lighting, and the ability to play photos and videos from a thumb USB drive too.
Very nice features all, but the price tags aren’t the cheapest either: 1,700,000 and 3,800,000 won ($1,150 and $3,325 USD respectively). Eventually we imagine these making their way to the states and other shores as they evolve.

Wire Thin: LG to claim “world’s thinnest LCD HDTV” with new release
December 21, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, LG, Product Reviews, TV Brands
CES 2010 is gearing up to be quite the big show indeed, and its only about 2 weeks away. The race to the thinnest LCD TV is still going on, but LG appears to have to taken the lead with the release of their 42-inch 1080p panel that’s just 2.6mm (.1 inch) thin. That’s 1/10 of an inch, boys and girls. I don’t see anyone beating that anytime soon.
The prototype LED-backlit unit is super-light too, weighing in at just 8.8 pounds. No other specs release, but those alone are enough to set our mouths drooling. For now, with the release of this unit, they can claim the title of the “World’s Thinnest” LCD HDTV. We’ll have to sit back and see if anyone else at CES can best this record, and it won’t be from lack of trying, no doubt.
3-D Bonanza: LG predicts almost 4 million 3-D HDTVs sold by 2011
December 16, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, LG, Product News, TV Brands
3D HDTV is becoming (slowly) a big buzz word among HDTV makers right now, even if a real working model isn’t available in the marketplace yet. LG, one of the companies that could actually make something like this happen, has predicted a big sales explosion of 3D HDTVs in the next few years.
We’re LG fans, but even we’re not too sure about the splash 3D tech in TVs will actually make, given the investment many have made in their existing HDTV units. It will take a number of years for enough content to appear to make it worthwhile to pay the premium 3-dimensional TVs will fetch early on.
They’ve also announced a “wide range” of 3D sets to come in next few years, measuring between 42 and 72 inches wide, to really flex the muscle of the 3D world properly. We’re not one to bet against technology these days, its moving too fast. But we’ll take a “wait and see” approach for now.
Business News: Kodak selling OLED display tech to LG
December 4, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Industry News, LG, TV Brands
We all know Kodak isn’t really an HDTV company, but they just happened to have first invented OLED specs and materials back in the 70s. Now it appears they’re leaving OLED tech they founded to a company that can do lots of good things with it: LG.
They’re handing it over to LG, who first signed a deal with Kodak in March ’09 for utilizing Kodak tech, and as reported in many circles, they started selling a 15″ OLED earlier this month, and has said they will have a 30″ model out by 2011 or 2012. We can’t wait.
LG and Kodak also agreed to share display technologies of all kinds for a few years, and that means nothing but good things for the two newly found business friends, and better quality for all the rest of us.
Leaked Info: Sony has some OLED goodness up its sleeve
Sony has some plans for a new OLED television, but be ready to pay through the nose, it appears.
Pictured are some ‘leaked’ Sony documents are showing a new “KDL-ZX Series OLED” on the 2010 / 2011 schedule/roadmap, enough to make any HDTV fan’s pulse quicken. All these on here are prototypes, reportedly, so their chances for making it to market are up in the air.
But with Sony’s 2-year old 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV now made to look midget-like by LG‘s new 15-inch OLED TV we reported about and a new 20″ OLED projected for 2010, Sony realized they needed to step on the gas pedal a bit with development, lest they be beaten in their own backyard.
Lots of new TV models abound in the document, including a planned 60″ 240Hz model coming possibly next year and UV2A technology which has us pretty excited.
