Pro Definition: The Philips 9704 Pro Line LED LCD TV
November 22, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Philips, Product News, TV Brands
Philips hasn’t always been associated with extreme specs as far as their HDTVs have gone up until now. They’re reasonably priced, middle of the road equipment for the most part, and perhaps this new line bound for the UK first will change that perception.
Philips unveiled their new 9704 LED Pro line of TVs bound for the UK, coming with an eye-popping 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a 200Hz refresh rate, and a ultra-quick 1-ms response time. Drool-worthy to be certain, but the next feature will make them even more attractive.
Philips claims that both models — the 40″ 40PFL9704 and the 46″ 46PFL9704 are 40-50% more energy-sipping than previous models with lower specs, another fact we very much appreciate. Get a load of the 5 HDMI ports too.
Philips Pro models will be available in early December, with the 40″ model going for around £1,799 (around $2,969 USD) and its big brother, the 46″ model will run you some coin: £2,499 (about $4,124 USD).

Preview: The Philips Ultra-Widescreen 21:9 56″ HDTV

Dutch site Tweakers.net was lucky enough to get a review model of the new 21:9 Philips 56″ super widescreen wonder we covered previously, and it looks mighty good indeed.
Pics include the one we show here, plus some more juicy pics, including Transformers: The Movie showing with no letterbox bars at all. It’s a 2K resolution TV with a 80,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio that (according to the article) is supposed to be super impressive.
For now, no prices or US release has been announced, but after seeing this, we’re crossing our fingers we’ll see it on US soil before too long. Some doubt there would be a market for this TV here; we care to disagree. We’d grab it up, being big movie watchers we are.
Yes, the article is in Dutch; thank heavens for Google translator. Follow this link.

Going Double D: Philips scraps 3D division of their HDTVs

The recession is hitting many people hard, and phrases like “staycation” are filtering into the public consciousness, people going more basic with their needs and wants. But even large companies are having to make sacrifices. Philips is a case in point with this report.
Philips is going completely 2D as of now. The past year or so, they’ve been showing off their 3D displays that don’t need glasses to work, but now the company has cut out their 3D Solutions division, which was scrapped due to financial reasons and to focus on their core TV business.
Probably not a bad call really, and it appears that 3D revolution banner will have to be carried by another company now.
Sunday Savings: Special Dell Coupon Code
Helping you save money on a great HDTV is our mission at Screen Sleuth, and once again we’ve scoured the internet for the best deals out there right now, and now we have a pretty nice deal to report.

They’re featuring the Philips 47PFL3603D 47” 1080P LCD HDTV for $1399.99, which isn’t bad, but then we have a $400 off coupon code: G08?43$LG3ZZF$ (Expires 03/26) and free shipping too. It’s one of the best deals around on a very cool HDTV.
No need for thanks; it’s our duty to supply our readers with the best deals around. Happy viewing!
Info Nugget: Philips Cinema 21:9 has a release date
February 20, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Philips, TV Brands, Technology News
A recent UK trade show revealed that the large HDTV wonder would be released “sometime this Spring”, but now more solid details about price and shipping date have been revealed. There’s some good and bad news associated with this, however…the price will be a tad more than originally suggested.
The 56-inch 21:9 (that’s theater width screen) widescreen HDTV panel will cost you a wallet-busting $5,000 USD. So this one is squarely in the “elite” category of entertainment items.
We previously posted about this TV and its awesome specs, so no doubt it will appeal to the high-end market right out of the gate and get its fair share of takers. We can’t wait to see it when it comes out and we’ll bring you the early reviews, of course.
Not for US consumption: The Philips 56″ Cinema 21:9 HDTV
January 31, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Philips, TV Brands, Technology News
In one of the stranger moves in recent HDTV history, (and if one spokesman who talked to ZDnet recently is accurate), Philips’ quite awesome experiment in 21:9 HDTV displays, the 56-inch Cinema 21:9 HDTV (article about the TV itself in the link) won’t ever be available in the US. And it’s a head scratcher as to why, the spokesman didn’t have an answer.
Why doesn’t Philips like the US for this device and why was this decision made? It missed much of CES 2009, it seems to have handed over its DVD and TV day-to-day decision making to Funai recently, and most of their top notch gear seems to only be planned to be available across the ocean. They seem to have developed a strange allergy to the American market in general of late.
It’s common sense that the Americans love their gadgets, and would snap this up if it landed on these shores. Who knows, they may change their mind. We hope Philips sees the light at one point.
Philips announces new 21:9 LCD TV line coming soon
January 15, 2009 by Derek
Filed under Philips, TV Brands, Technology News
Philips announced a 56-inch Cinema 21:9 LCD TV (the same aspect ratio used in movie theaters) on Thursday. and Philips’ Ambilight background lighting as well for the best, brightest picture. Oddly, it wasn’t announced at CES 2009 which recently concluded (the ideal place to announce a fancy gadget like this), but in a press release today.
The aspect ratio is designed to duplicate theater dimensions exactly, though there is no 21:9 direct content available, so it won’t be fully supported yet (the highest DVD ratio available is 16:9), so being first on the bandwagon isn’t always the best thing.
Philips hasn’t released any exact specs on the set (those are coming in late February), and pricing hasn’t been released yet (hint: it won’t be cheap). The unit will measure 56 inches and include Philips’ Ambilight background lighting technology to adjust to the lighting environment for best viewing. The actual unit should be released in Spring 2009 or so and be available to adorn your living room.
Philips 42″ 1080p LCD HDTV for only $797, free shipping
Here’s a really great deal from a place that usually offers really good deals, Wal-Mart. This holiday in particular seems to be a really impressive season for amazing HDTV deals from all manner of stores.
How about a Philips 42″ Full HD 1080p LCD HDTV for $797, with free Site to Store shipping. Specs include: 3 HDMI connections, 20-watt stereo amplifiers built-in, 29,000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, removable stand, and excellent overall reviews (4 1/2 star average) on the site.
This may be just the ticket for someone who wants to dive into HD but doesn’t have the money for the really super fancy models (some of which may look about the same as this one anyway). Great deal.
Expiration isn’t stated but its assumed when they run out of stock, that will be the end of this offer. You can purchase the TV here.

A Full 3D HDTV without glasses redefines 3D
October 1, 2008 by Derek
Filed under Philips, TV Brands, Technology News
Forget everything you knew about 3D TV. Philips aims to change the standard with a new TV announced yesterday.
Philips demonstrated a Quad Full Autosteroscopic 3D HD TV at an event in Hollywood related to 3D, after at least 7 years of ongoing development. Quad Full TV’s stream data at such a extraordinary rate that they increase a display’s screen resolution to a truly eye-popping 3840×2160 (or 8.29 million pixels), which is about four times the number of pixels of the highest current HDTV standard. Awesome doesn’t begin to describe it.
The 3D part of it can be watched without glasses or eye strain, which is amazing in and of itself, and is part of the engineering of the device. Both high resolution and fast data rates are essential for a 3D pic to be believable.
The vast array of pixels produce images use the same left/right eye trick as traditional 3D, and its speed slaps the images together almost instantly. This creates a large viewing angle (160 degrees) and Philips promises up to 46 simultaneous views at once, which means the resolution is a full 23X better than standard 3D with the glasses you’ve seen before.
Rumor has it that it can even “rewrite” traditional movies to be more 3D with its 3D Wow Technology.
And no, it isn’t cheap. They’ll run you about $25,000 or so, which more than likely will limit it to commercial application for now.
