The Age of Dimensions is Here: Samsung begins releasing 3D HDTV lineup

February 13, 2010 by
Filed under Product News, Samsung, TV Brands

462081634Yes, we know you’ve been waiting, and now they’re here: this year’s 3D HDTV lineup from Samsung are available for for you to eagerly grab up at some internet retailers right now, and we’re greeting this news with a mixture of anticipation and wary skepticism.

The edge-lit LED and 1.1-inch thin C7000 lineup will come in 40- 46- and 55″ monster sizes, and will offer more in features than simply 3D, reportedly. Those include the availability of Samsung Apps, Internet@TV, support for Skype,  media streaming, and it’ll even adjust res and picture based on the source of your content, from a Blu-Ray all the way down to a Flash drive.

And the price won’t totally send you to the poorhouse, in a nice surprise. The UN46C7000 (scheduled to be released April 16) has a preorder sticker of $2,599 to be slapped on it, which isn’t horribly bad. The 40″ will go for $1,999 and the 55″ will run you $3,299. Bear in mind, they won’t come with the 3D shutter glasses necessary to view the 3D content.

First On The Train: Samsung 3D HDTVs first in production

January 27, 2010 by
Filed under Product News, Samsung, TV Brands

3d-panelaWe’ve written quite a bit about HDTV, 3D and the upside and doubts we’ve held about how popular it’ll become in the long run, but it appears a company is taking a gamble and producing a 3D HDTV in mass amounts – Samsung. According to published reports, they’re launching big-time production on a new line of 3D HDTV models in just a few days.

No concrete info on details like sizes, dates, prices, that sort of thing — but here’s what we’ve heard and suspect: the line will consist of 40-, 46- and 55-inch LCD models with their crispy new 3D 240Hz motion technology to support 3D images and movies, and 3D blu-ray discs are already being produced.

Even with 2D imagery, the new quicker response time should make any TV viewing better, but at the same time, will you run out and buy a new TV to support home tech that’s really in its infancy? We aren’t too sure either. We’ll update you as we hear more.

Legal Blow: ITC rules Samsung was bad, bans import of some LCDs

November 10, 2009 by
Filed under Industry News, Samsung, Sharp, TV Brands

8-7-07-sharp_samsungWe love us some legal dirt, so witness the latest legal blow struck by Sharp in the TV wars: Samsung was found to have violated some patents, so has barred Sammy from selling LCD TVs in the US (a least importing them from here on out) until its corrected.

The US International Trade Commission already ruled in mid-June that they had violated 1 patent from Sharp, but this ruling says they actually violated 4 in total, and handed down the import ban.

Samsung has said they will comply with the ruling, but also saying there will be “no impact on our business and our ability to meet market demand., and has also said they plan no meetings to negotiate with Sharp for now, so a workaround is probably the plan for now. We’ll see how deeply this impacts Samsung’s bottom line in the long run.

The Thin Race Continues: Samsung debuts thinnest-ever (again) LCD TV

October 26, 2009 by
Filed under Product News, Samsung, TV Brands

needle_slim_samsung_004Yes, the “thin panel” race in HDTV LCD panels is getting a little ridiculous right now, but hey, it seems that’s what people want, so by gosh, they’re getting it. And Samsung has fired yet another volley in the thinnest-ever LCD race.

What measures 3.9-mm thin? No, not the typical Korean models showing this stuff off, though that’s not too far from the truth; this time, however, its Samsung’s latest LED backlit LCD with 120Hz refresh and 5,000:1 reported contrast too. Now thinner than two pencils; that’s pretty crazy.

And yes, that makes it the world’s thinnest LCD panel – beating LG’s 5.9-mm thick LCDs, which previously held the record. No word on price or availability aside from “soon”, where it should debut in Korea/Asia first, then travel here.

First Look: The Samsung 55″ 240Hz 3D HDTV

October 14, 2009 by
Filed under Product News, Samsung, Technology News, TV Brands

14oct09_sm24055Engadget HD has a preview of the upcoming Samsung 3D HDTV, and it’s supposed to be pretty breathtaking indeed, if first rumors are true.

More from the post:

Look, we know this 3D thing is as likely to sink as it is to swim right now, but we have to hand it to Samsung — it’s pursuing the idea with some pretty hefty ambition. A 55-inch 1080p panel with a true 240Hz refresh rate is a decent base on which to build your paradigm-shifting new offering. Using a set of “shutter” glasses, which rapidly alternate between blocking out the left and right eye, the set is capable of delivering the full 240Hz quality, debatable as its benefits may be. Of course, the value or otherwise of a TV like this is going to be found only by experiencing its output in person, so if you’re somewhere near Seoul this week, head on down to the IMID 2009 conference to get an eyeful of an early model.

We’re not sure about the long-term benefits of a 3D technology that might not ever come to roost, but 240Hz and 55″ inches of the latest LCD HDTV Samsung technology sound good to us.

CEDIA Report: Samsung showing off 65″ LCD HDTV

September 13, 2009 by
Filed under Industry News, Product News, Samsung, TV Brands

samsung655_lg_600CEDIA was home to one of the more impressive displays of LCD beauty we’ve yet seen; the 65″ Samsung gigantic masterpiece, the LN65B650, even if the “shrubbery” obscures it a bit.

This is some of the best old-school CCFL tech has on offer, indeed, proving that the older tech ain’t quite dead yet, and can look mighty good when done the right way.

It’s not razor thin or anything, but we’d be quite proud to show this baby off at our home or watch any sporting event on it. Bring it on.

No word as to what this may cost, or where/when it’ll be available, but we’ll pass it on to you as soon as we hear about it.

Report: 58% of salespeople recommend Samsung HDTV?

September 11, 2009 by
Filed under Industry News, Samsung, TV Brands

samsung-hdtv-20090910Would you trust your big time electronics entertainment juggernaut screen decision on the opinion of someone in a blue shirt in a big box electronics store? Many who read this might now wouldn’t, but plenty do, and there’s an interesting new report about the brands they tend to recommend.

They’re generally told that Samsung HDTVs are the best a rather surprising 58% of the time, based on J.D. Power and Associates reports and surveys, which (thankfully) also found that salespeople are less likely to recommend LCD over Plasma, which is good but contradictory over the market sales norms we’ve heard about.

We’re not knocking Samsung, who makes some nice TVs no doubt, but the brand and frequency sort of shocked us a bit. We always recommend you read reviews for yourself and do your own research before buying any HDTV. You’ll thank us, and your eyes will thank you as well.

The Crown Ever Shifting: Vizio still tops in HDTV sales, but Samsung closing in

August 23, 2009 by
Filed under Industry News, Samsung, TV Brands, Vizio

isuppliq2No matter the legal rigamarole, lawsuits, etc, Vizio kept shipping out LCD HDTVs in huge amounts during the second quarter, making up 21.7% of the overall market, according to manufacturers reporting company iSuppli. But their HDTV crown is worn on an uneasy head these days, as competition is slowly closing in on them.

Samsung is now hot on their heels, with a jump from 17.8% in the 1st quarter to 21.3% in Q2, mainly because of their new LED backlighting sets they released, accounting for 2.2% of all LCD sales.

They also note many more customers buying new models to replace older models, something companies always salivate about, as a growing trend. Let’s hope this trend continues.
