Kitchen Friendly: The Toshiba 19LV612U HDTV

There have been kitchen friendly sets released before, most of which could be mounted under a cabinet or whatever. This new line from Toshiba adds a few twists though, with a finish that resists stains and is designed to fit right in with an average modern kitchen.

Announced as the of the Stainless Style TV line, this 18.5-inch set has a built-in DVD player, integrated digital TV tuner, and is 720p (its only real weakness feature wise).

It’s coated with stainless steel, which makes it fit in well and resist the obvious moisture and other issues that can happen with a delicate electronic appliance in a kitchen. Other specs include: a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, HDMI inputs, headphone plugin and of course, mounting support.

It’s expected to debut and cut into family meal conversation time in mid-September for $349.99 SRP.

Cell High: Toshiba soon to launch big-time Cell TV

The latest rumor from Toshiba, who has been working on their big Cell TV for awhile now, is a rumor that has projected the TV for a possible late 2009 debut.

The HDTV, expected to feature a 3D GUI, six HD tuner recorders, network video playback, SD to 4K upscaling and more – is scheduled to be released in 4-6 months in Japan. It appears right now that Japan is going to see the new tech first, Europe a few months later and the U.S. somewhere in between those two dates.

We personally can’t wait; it’ll be a big step forward for integrated HDTV units that are a bit smarter than current TVs, with upscaling far superior to anything out there right now.

The Race (in the UK) Has a New 2nd place Company: Toshiba

The race is on: Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, LG and the others all running for top position in the sales rankings. And the one surprisingly gaining the most ground across the pond of late? Would ya believe: Toshiba.

Right before welcoming in a new CEO, the company reported that their numbers regarding TVs are on the rise, and they definitely have high hopes for 2009.

While speaking at Toshiba’s annual preview, the company stated that 12 months ago, Toshiba’s TV business was at its  lowest point ever, at just 3.4 percent, which was good for more or less last place. They now report they have leaped over Sony for 2nd place in the UK TV marketplace, which is a very solid accomplishment indeed. The only one ahead of them: Samsung, and it doesn’t appear they’ll pass them in the near future, since they have a very solid lead already.

Good for Toshiba; a little good news for these long-time company giants is good news for everyone who loves HDTV.

UK News: Toshiba REGZA SV LCD’s to be introduced across the pond

Toshiba’s cool new SV series, which was introduced with other new HDTVs at CES this year, is going to be sold this year in the UK, according to reports released earlier today.

It’ll come out in 46″ and 55″ models, and the sets feature Toshiba’s “Deep Lagoon” design, a backlit panel, Resolution and built-in upscaling technology, four HDMI ports and USB connections thrown in too. Blacks and colors are expected to be accurate and rich, according to early reports.

It’s scheduled for an August 2009 release date, and no price ranges were released. We’re expecting this model on these shores assuming it does well in due time, and we can’t wait for these solid models to be released for consumption in others parts of the world.

It’s Easy Being “Green”: New HDTV models from Toshiba to debut in Japan soon

Going “green” does seem to be the new catchword in the HDTV lexicon, and Toshiba knows it. The latest Toshiba models from Japan aims to save big bucks (or at least a few bucks) on the user’s energy bill, and these models will be debuting in Tokyo very soon.

The lineup includes: the 32″ 32C8000, the 37″ 37C8000 and the big boy, the 42″ 42C8000 reportedly use from 30-50% less juice than previous models in the same line, and all 3 models features the now fairly standard 120Hz technology to make action scenes flow smoothly.

All include a digital TV tuner, and the bigger two models include 1080p panels (the 32″ does 720p). No prices were released as usual, but models should be in Tokyo stores at the end of March or so. We’re fairly certain other shores should follow later on.

Lawsuit Blues: Toshiba loses $1 million DLP Bulb case

Toshiba’s bottom line hasn’t been faring so well of late, and now its taken another hit: they just lost a lawsuit involving replacing DLP bulbs.

New York courts decided that Toshiba needs to pay over $1 million to settle a class action lawsuit filed in 2007. The suit stated: ”the lamps of certain Toshiba DLP TV’s were susceptible to premature failure causing purchasers to repeatedly expend hundreds of dollars for replacement bulbs, which suffered from the same defect.”  On purpose, it seems to imply. Now many companies do this sort of thing in sneaky little ways, as a product that never breaks doesn’t make as much money.

After a long investigation, Toshiba was found to be responsible for replacing the bulbs and compensating the 265,000+ customers impacted. Warranties on bulbs was also extended to 1 year on affected models. Well, that’s how it goes…hopefully Toshiba will make sure to get their bulbs from a better source next time around.

Tech Notes: Toshiba playing around with OLED TVs

Toshiba has been claiming they’re tweaking OLED TV technology that could be appearing in TVs in the very near future, and could best LCD in color accuracy and black levels, two primary LCD sticking points (though not as big a sticking point as a few years ago; LCD has improved in these areas somewhat).

Of course, Toshiba has been saying this about OLED for a few years now.

Lately, the trade papers are reporting that they are working with diffraction gratings (a technical buzzword for reflecting light in certain ways internally) to make an OLED picture extra sharp and clear.  Their goal is to make the output efficiency much better than LCD currently, and these new tech additions have improved light output by 60%, without increasing power consumption, which sounds good to us.

Toshiba for their part still claims mainstream OLED TVs are years away even now, but after hearing about (and seeing some of the tiny OLED TV’s out there now) them, we’re excited to see the first practically priced bigger models roll out.

Deal of the Day: Toshiba 40″ 1080P HDTV, $690 + shipping

Here’s yet another great deal on HDTV joy, this time from long-time veteran vendor TigerDirect on a 40″ 1080P HDTV with 10,000:1 contrast ratio, good specs and really good overall reviews.

How about $689.99 + shipping for a deal? It’s the best we’ve seen from a major vendor for this model by $100-$300, and the picture has been raved about on a number of sites. A few sites have commented that the sound could stand some improvement, but hey, for this price, you can’t go too wrong.

The new Toshiba 52-inch REGZA may have the total package

Toshiba’s 52-inch REGZA 52RV535U LCD model was released a bit ago, and delivers a seemingly great package of features: 1920x 1080 pixels resolution, SRT Super Resolution Technology upconverts and enhances lower res signals to make them look better (something LG has had for awhile now), progressive scanning, PixelPure 4G (how many names can they come up with these?) 14-bit internal digital video processing keeps things smooth even with lots of action going on, and ColorMaster color control for a dynamic range of colors and seemingly to make black and grey ranges better. 

The more interesting feature that hasn’t been totally taken from other sets is called AutoView. This innovative technology uses an external light sensor to monitor ambient light levels, and adjusts the picture to optimize the picture based on the light in the room. Early reviews indicate it works pretty well.

Audio is usually an area most LCD’s skimp in, but this one’s SoundStrip speaker system uses a thin-line speaker design with reportedly better range and sound than most sets of its ilk.

One thing I love: the StableSound feature keeps commercials from blowing eardrums after a typical broadcast, something that should be standard on TV’s from here on out, in this writer’s humble opinion.
